Osseo’s longest serving senior center coordinator is turning in her bingo card. Arleen Barrett has been a part-time paid employee for more than 30 years, but says now is the right time for retirement. “I’m gonna miss it here,” Arleen says. “There comes a time when a person just has to set back and say I’m gonna relax.”
Arleen wasn’t just the coordinator and planner – she also served as a host, and a friend. Quick with a cup of coffee and a smile for guests, Arleen is described by City Administrator Riley Grams as a warm, embracing person. “She’s provided a lot of joy for Osseo area people,” Grams says.
She’s made so much of an impact on the community that the city council took notice. On learning of her retirement, they presented her with a plaque declaring February 11th as Arleen Barrett Day. But all good things end, and so it is with Arleen’s tenure. At 92, she says she’s finally ready to retire, but might just come back from time to time to enjoy the program instead of running the show.
“I’m going to miss them all,” says Arleen of the Senior Center regulars. “They were kind to me, and I was kind to them. They needed a lot of hugs, and I was kind of a hugger.”
