An increasing number of lost pets in the area are being returned to a local humane society, which makes it harder for owners to find their pets.
Instead, folks should call 911 where law enforcement can take the pets to the Pets Under Police Security (PUPS) facility.
PUPS is a contracted impound for 7 cities including Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Champlin, Crystal, New Hope and Plymouth.
“Any animals coming into us has to come from the police department. We cannot take any animals directly from public,” said Cassandra Boser, the animal containment coordinator for PUPS.
She added that 800 plus lost pets are dropped off at PUPS each year.
Most dogs are usually returned to their rightful owner, but only 15-20% of cats are reclaimed.
If pets aren’t reclaimed by 5 business days, Boser said they’ll go to one of the approved rescue facilities where they can be adopted.
“We check online missing pets sites to see if anyone posts them missing; we have Facebook that we post any missing strays, scan for micro chips, if they have any tags on collar we’ll contact the numbers,” Boser explained.
Boser said bringing a lost pet to the Animal Humane Society will make it tough for owners to find them. In some cases, pets could be transferred outside of the city to another humane society.
“It extends process and takes longer for pets to get back home with the owner. Owners are not looking at cities outside of their area where their pets may have been taken,” Boser said.
