A team of students from Wayzata High School won the National Science Bowl Regional Competition this past weekend and they will advance to the finals in Washington, D.C. this spring. Students had to answer questions about biology, chemistry, earth and space science, physics and math.
The U.S. Department of Energy, who sponsors the competition, announced the winners this week.
“The National Science Bowl has grown into one of the most prestigious and competitive science academic competitions in the country, challenging students to excel in the STEM fields so vital to America’s future,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry, in a press release. “I am honored to congratulate Wayzata High School for advancing to the National Finals.”
Thousands of middle and high school students participate in the National Science Bowl, where they answer questions in a fast-paced question-and-answer format.
The top 16 high school teams and the top 16 middle school teams in the national competition will win cash awards for their schools’ science departments. The top two winning teams also get a special prize. Last year’s winners got an all-expenses paid science trip to Alaska to learn about glaciers.
